Image
The parents of a toddler found wandering alone in the aftermath of the Highland Park mass shooting at a Fourth of July parade were both killed during the massacre, local media have reported. A picture of two year-old Aiden McCarthy went viral in the aftermath of the attack before he was reunited with his grandparents. But it has now been revealed that the child’s parents are both dead. Kevin McCarthy, 37, and Irina McCarthy, 35, were both named as victims of the shooter who attacked the parade in the upmarket Chicago suburb, injuring dozens as as well as killing seven people. Local television station CBS Chicago reported that a GoFundMe page had been set up to raise money for the child, Aiden McCarthy, who will now be raised by his grandparents. https://twitter.com/MarParNews/status/1544418629642584070?s=20&t=Thmhmz0X42GRUrkXMl-19g “At two years old, Aiden is left in the unthinkable position; to grow up without his parents,” the page said. What we know about the Highland Park shooting suspect

Image
Hours after gunfire interrupted the Highland Park, Illinois, July Fourth parade, killing seven people and wounding dozens more, police apprehended the man they believe was responsible. Robert “Bobby” E. Crimo III, 21, faces seven charges of first-degree murder in connection with the shooting, which authorities said he allegedly carried out by climbing onto the rooftop of a nearby business and opening fire minutes after the parade started, sending parade-goers and participants running for safety. Investigators believe the suspect planned “this attack for several weeks,” Chris Covelli, spokesperson for the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force, said at one of several news conferences Tuesday. The suspect dressed in women’s clothing to help conceal his identity, Covelli said, blended in with the crowds as they fled the area, and went to his mother’s house. Law enforcement have yet to establish a motive, but Covelli said there has been no information to suggest the attack was “racially motiv...

6 dead, 30 hurt in shooting at Chicago-area July 4 parade

Image
HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. — A gunman on a rooftop opened fire on an Independence Day parade in suburban Chicago on Monday, killing at least six people, wounding at least 30 and sending hundreds of marchers, parents with strollers and children on bicycles fleeing in terror, police said. Authorities said a man named as a person of interest in the shooting was taken into police custody Monday evening after an hourslong manhunt in and around Highland Park, an affluent community of about 30,000 on Chicago’s north shore. The July 4 shooting was just the latest to shatter the rituals of American life. Schools, churches, grocery stores and now community parades have all become killing grounds in recent months. This time, the bloodshed came as the nation tried to find cause to celebrate its founding and the bonds that still hold it together. “It definitely hits a lot harder when it’s not only your hometown but it’s also right in front of you,” resident Ron Tuazon said as he and a friend returned to t...

Scrapping Roe v. Wade makes the US an outlier in the West. Here's how it compares on abortion rights

Image
London (CNN) - The US Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade on Friday has reverberated around the world, setting the country apart from its key allies on reproductive healthcare. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said it "clearly has a massive impact on people's thinking around the world," and called the court's decision "a big step backwards." Other world leaders have also slammed the decision, with protests scheduled to take place across cities in Europe over the weekend. The move counters a global trend towards freer access to abortion, and places the US in a very small club of countries that have moved to restrict access in recent years. Some US allies have greater access to abortion Until Friday, the US was one of 56 countries where abortion was legal at a woman's request, with no requirement for justification, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). It was generally in the company of other Western nations, since few deve...

Ukraine war: UK joins ban on imports of Russian gold

Image
The UK, US, Canada and Japan will ban imports of Russian gold in an effort to hit Moscow's ability to fund the war in Ukraine. The UK PM said the move would "strike at the heart of Putin's war machine". Gold exports were worth £12.6bn ($15.4bn) to Russia in 2021, and the UK says their importance has increased since the invasion as oligarchs rush to buy bullion to avoid sanctions. It comes as the G7 group of the world's richest nations meet in Germany. US President Biden suggested the other G7 nations - Germany, France and Italy - would also join the ban. "Together, the G7 will announce that we will ban the import of Russian gold, a major export that rakes in tens of billions of dollars for Russia," he said in a tweet. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson added: "We need to starve the Putin regime of its funding. The UK and our allies are doing just that." With London a major global trading hub for gold, the UK government said the move would have a h...

Nearly 8,000-year-old skull found in Minnesota River

Image
REDWOOD FALLS, Minn. (AP) — A partial skull that was discovered last summer by two kayakers in Minnesota will be returned to Native American officials after investigations determined it was about 8,000 years old. The kayakers found the skull in the drought-depleted Minnesota River about 110 miles (180 kilometers) west of Minneapolis, Renville County Sheriff Scott Hable said. Thinking it might be related to a missing person case or murder, Hable turned the skull over to a medical examiner and eventually to the FBI, where a forensic anthropologist used carbon dating to determine it was likely the skull of a young man who lived between 5500 and 6000 B.C., Hable said. “It was a complete shock to us that that bone was that old,” Hable told Minnesota Public Radio. The anthropologist determined the man had a depression in his skull that was “perhaps suggestive of the cause of death.” After the sheriff posted about the discovery on Wednesday, his office was criticized by several Native America...

Terror alert raised in Norway after 2 killed, 10 wounded in shooting at nightclub in Oslo

At least two people were killed and 10 injured in a shooting at a nightclub in Oslo, Norway, early Saturday morning, according to Norwegian authorities, prompting officials to raise the terror alert. Investigators said the suspect, identified as a 42-year-old Norwegian citizen originally from Iran, was arrested after opening fire at three locations in downtown Oslo. Police said two men, one in his 50s and and the other his 60s, died in the shootings. Ten people were treated for serious injuries, but none of them was believed to be in life-threatening condition. Eleven others had minor injuries. The Norwegian Police Security Service raised its terror alert level from "moderate" to "extraordinary" — the highest level — after the attack, which sent panicked revelers fleeing into the streets or trying to hide from the gunman. The service's acting chief, Roger Berg, called the attack an "extreme Islamist terror act" and said the suspect had a "long his...
